The Cottelston Bulletin 8

Michael S. Sellinger

While the art season begins in September, there is still plenty to see in the summer. Below are a few artists that caught my eye in summer group shows.

Bendix Harms at Anton Kern

There is an awkward execution in the work of Hamburg artist Harms, He favors expressionistic directness over painterly finesse. Out of his bold gestural strokes and jagged brushwork there emanates a feeling of exuberance, self-deprecating humor and cheerful absurdity.

Natalie Frank at Mitchell, Innes and Nash

Frank's compelling brushwork is terse, yet expressive. With seemingly minimal effort, she achieves maximum effect. In this self-portrait, her expressions are calm and stoic, while the gaze tends toward resolve and directness. Frank recently completed her MFA at Columbia.

Leslie Hewitt at Wallspace

Hewitt utilizes the camera as a tool to reposition ones view, subtly disrupting photography's inherent window effect and traditional documentary function. Her re-photographed family snapshots on found journal entries and 70's shag carpet play with these expectations in a sculptural manner.

Logan Grider at RARE

Grider's paintings echo the ripple effect of his existence. He is the painter and
the conductor. His work reflects the constant state of activity of our milieu - the flux of our chaotic existence.

Daniel Gordon at Zach Feuer

A quick look and Gordon's photographs seem ordinary. However, further study reveals unnatural moments, often at the edges. These incongruencies give insight into his process - the tableaus are constructed out of sculptures made of photographs.

With over 150 shows opening in Chelsea this week, there is sure to be lots of new work to see. Please call to arrange a tour.
