After a subdued Art Basel Miami Beach in December, New York braces itself for The Armory Show - and it seems as if the weather has oriented to the art world’s mood ring. The good news is that there is still a market, as sales occurred last month at ADAA Art Show.

As if ignoring the chill in the air, an expanded Armory Show opens tomorrow, having added more galleries via smaller booths and a Modern section. Additional, the fair’s satellite sister, Volta, is adding 50% more galleries. Seems the Merchandise Mart, owner of both fairs, is using the downturn to increase market share. An interesting development considering that, as of December 2008, the Mart also has taken leasehold ownership of the Piers. Therefore, despite four fairs not returning in 2009, the total number of galleries participating in fairs is only down 10%. (For a map of all the fairs, please see below).

One group happy about the snow are the artists participating in M*A*S*H NY. Cottelston Advisors is producing the fourth installment of the M*A*S*H series of exhibitions, which take place during major art fairs. DARKNESS DESCENDS: Norwegian Art Now delves into the uniquely Norwegian style of neo-romanticism in contemporary art. Located at 217 East 42nd Street, the exhibition opens Thursday night from 7-9pm.

Remember, art is a great way to lift one’s spirits and marvel at human ingenuity. So, even if you are not in the market, come out and escape the (economic) cold.
